On December 6, 2023, at the age of 66,
Dr. h. c. prof. h. c. prof. Ing. Stanislav Kmeť, DrSc.,
the former Rector of the Technical University of Košice, has passed away.

Professor Stanislav Kmeť was born on March 6, 1957, in Přerov. He graduated from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Technical College in Košice, in the field of Civil Engineering with a specialisation on Static Analysis of Constructions. In 1992 he was habilitated as Associate Professor in Theory and Construction of Civil Engineering Structures, and in 2000 he was inaugurated and awarded the title of Professor in Theory and Construction of Civil Engineering Structures. In 2020 he was awarded the degree of DrSc., in the scientific field of Engineering Constructions and Transport Structures.

After graduation, he worked as an assistant at the Department of Load­‑bearing Constructions at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical College in Košice. Later, he worked as an assistant professor and deputy head of the Department of Metal and Wooden Constructions at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical College in Košice. In 1991, he became the Vice­‑Dean for Foreign Relations and Scientific Education at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical College in Košice. Later, he worked as the Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Košice, as well as the Vice­‑Rector for TUKE Development. He was elected to the office of Rector of the Technical University of Košice in 2015 and held this position until August 2023.

Professor Stanislav Kmeť was a distinguished Slovak pedagogue and scientist in the field of civil engineering. In his professional life he was devoted to the problems of theory and design of intelligent adaptive load­‑bearing systems, their analysis and simulation by application of nonlinear mathematical­‑physical computational models and artificial intelligence methods.

He was a member of the editorial board of six national and international journals, author, and co­‑author of five books, 110 scientific and academic articles in journals, including CC, more than 230 scientific and academic articles in conference proceedings. He lectured in more than 30 countries worldwide and he contributed to 36 projects and 50 expert reports and assessments for industry.

In Professor Kmeť, we are losing not only an outstanding expert, scientist, and teacher but also the manager of our Alma Mater, but most of all a friendly and optimistic person with a wide horizon and an open heart.

The Rector of the Technical University of Košice, Prof. Ing. Peter Mésároš, PhD., on behalf of the University expresses his sincere condolences to the family and loved ones.
